Where Do You Start With Exercise?

Richard Kelly 6th May 2019

If you’ve decided to start up with exercise it can be pretty overwhelming where to start.  Joining a gym, committing to a class, going along with a friend or hiring a trainer are all fine ways to ensure that you commit and keep up a regular exercise regime.

Many people start with running, especially if they want to lose weight, or dive into weight training if they want to build up size.  However, initial motivation and enthusiasm wanes.  To begin with, you should start with something you enjoy.  This ensures that you maintain consistency and regularity, and it will make you feel good.

Ensuring that you are consistent and want to be working out in the way you are is an important first step.  Too many people take up exercise they really don’t want to be doing.  They dislike it and will abandon it at the first opportunity.  That’s why it’s so vital to start with something you can commit to and will enjoy.  If that is a dance class or if you really enjoy swimming then start there.

After that the best thing to do is to focus on technique with anything new you are starting with.  Getting good technique, focusing on the quality of your movements in weight lifting, or your running technique for runners, for instance, will see you adapt and improvement much faster than simply focusing on hard work alone.  Not only that but it will minimise your chances of injury, and maximise your results down the line.
