Exercising While Traveling

Richard Kelly 29th April 2019

Have you ever had to travel and tried to keep up your training programme? It’s tough. Many people tend to slack off the training when they go for a holiday, but what if your job requires you to travel? What if one to two days a week you’re away from home? It’s hard to keep up the consistency with exercise, especially if you have a late night or two at the office. Suddenly that week goes from three to four exercise sessions down to just one.

Keeping up your training in this situation requires a lot of dedication, it also means you need to be fairly creative in the limited environment you find in a hotel gym, or in extreme circumstances a hotel room.

Taking resistance bands with you is probably the best thing you can do. They are light weight and pretty easy to drop into a suitcase, giving you plenty of options no matter what circumstance you face in the hotel.

Programming flexibility is vital as well. You can work on strength, tone, weight loss, endurance, fitness, whatever it maybe be with relatively little equipment. Of course, having more equipment is better, but it should be relatively simple for an exercise expert to design a few workouts for you to use when traveling that tie into your goals and at the very least maintain things, so you don’t fall back when you travel.

Equally, if traveling is an irregular thing as part of your job then time out from a normal gym setting can be a great opportunity to work on those areas that are always neglected, such as mobility and stability. Those brief trips away can be fantastic for improving your body’s fundamentals, preventing injury and creating a much better platform for other your main training programme.

And this is the key point.  Don’t think of those trips away as an interruption to your training, think of them as an opportunity to vary your programming and work on areas you normally neglect.
