The importance of squats

Richard Kelly 24th June 2019

If there is one movement you should do, it’s squat.  More than any other exercise, it is more fundamental to human movement than any other.

Squats aren’t just a good exercise for the legs and butt, they benefit the heart and increase your strength too.  Recently we have seen the rise of the squat, thanks in large part to Crossfit, and an increasing desire for women to tone their legs and butts.  Regardless of the cause, the net effect has been the increase in squatting in general, and a far greater appreciation amongst gym goers of the importance of having a strong squat with good technique.

This can only be a good thing in the long term.

But as with anything, just because something can be of benefit doesn’t mean it should be abused.  The most important thing with squats is technique.  And in the beginning this is absolutely the case.  Worrying about rep numbers and how often to do them should come after your squat looks like a good squat.

A good full range squat shows mobility and stability of the body.  You can therefore learn a lot, and gain a lot, from squats.
